Public law solicitor Phil Shiner today accepted the inevitability of being struck off the roll as he admitted acting without integrity and acting recklessly. The former head of Public Interest Lawyers is appearing at the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal to face allegations connected with his role in bringing claims against the British Army in Iraq.
The admissions appear in a letter received by the Solicitors Regulation Authority yesterday.
In a case management hearing, the first public hearing into his case, Shiner denied misleading the administrative court over the Al-Sweady inquiry and misleading the inquiry itself. He also denied misleading the former Legal Services Commission in relation to grant of legal aid for judicial review.
He also denied dishonesty.
The SRA, which brought the charges, said it would need a two-week trial early next year to decide on the contested allegations.
The regulator said that its costs in the case amounted to £476,000 as of 22 November.
