International firm Eversheds’ merger with US firm Sutherland Asbill & Brennan has gone live today, creating a global firm with combined income of more than £600m.
The new firm, Eversheds Sutherland, has 2,300 lawyers in 29 countries. Last year, Sutherland’s profits were £237m while Eversheds’ stood at £406m.
The firms’ partners voted in favour of a tieup in December.
Bryan Hughes, chief executive of Eversheds, said establishing a ‘truly global platform’, including a strong presence in the US, has long been its number one strategic priority.
‘We are very much looking forward to working together, collaborating as equal partners to create a new and powerful offering in the legal sector,’ he added.
Sutherland managing partner, Mark Wasserman, added: ‘This new relationship strengthens our core competencies and provides us the opportunity to expand our client services globally.
‘Working together with our new colleagues worldwide, we are committed to delivering the benefits of this broadened international platform to our clients.’
The combined firm does not expect any significant internal structural changes at either constituent practice.
The combined firm is being led by joint chief executives as part of a six-strong global management team. They are Eversheds’ managing partner and chief executive elect, Lee Ranson, and Sutherland managing partner Wasserman.
